A page that faded unevenly, made even again
Documents rarely fade uniformly. A letter folded in a drawer for forty years is dark along the fold and pale at the exposed corner. Sun through a frame bleaches one half of a certificate. Faded document recovery models the fade as a gradient across the sheet and inverts it, so the page comes back consistent rather than merely darker.

An 1881 handwritten dower allotment, yellowed and washed pale across the sheet, recovered to even black ink on a clean, consistent page. The fade is mapped as a surface, then undone per region.
One precious page, or a whole shelf of them. Faded Document Recovery runs the same either way — here is the damage it takes on, and the records it runs across.
and the records it runs across
Why this is harder than it looks
A single global correction cannot fix an uneven fade. Set it for the pale corner and the dark side goes black; set it for the dark side and the corner stays invisible. The fade has to be measured as a surface across the page before it can be undone.
What this handles
- One half of a certificate lighter than the other
- Pale exposed edges on a framed or displayed document
- Fold lines darker than the panels either side
- Corner fading from light hitting a filed stack
- Overall wash-out with no obvious damage
- Album pages where only the uncovered area faded
How faded document recovery runs
The same three moves on every job, and the third one is the part most tools skip.
Map the fade
The paper tone is sampled across the whole sheet, producing a surface that describes how much density was lost where.
Invert the surface
The correction is applied per region against that map, so the pale corner is lifted hard and the intact side is barely touched.
Unify the paper
The paper itself is then brought to one tone - original, cream or archival white - so the sheet reads as one document again.
What actually happens to the page
Documents rarely fade uniformly. The correction has to see the fade as a shape before it can undo it.
The fade is sampled as a surface across the whole sheet
Set a correction for the pale corner and the dark side goes black; set it for the dark side and the corner stays invisible. Docovly samples paper tone across the sheet first, building a map of how much density was lost where.
- Density loss measured region by region
- Fold shadows and corner fade read as one surface
- No single global curve applied to the page
Lifted hard where it faded, barely touched where it held
The correction is applied against the map, so the exposed corner is lifted and the intact side is left alone. The paper itself is then brought to a single tone - and that tone is your choice, separate from the text recovery.
- Intact regions not dragged down to match the damage
- Paper tone a separate control from text recovery
- Original, natural cream or archival white
The evened page is read and the original is kept beside it
Levelling gives stroke recovery a consistent surface to work against, and the whole page is read back afterwards. The untouched original is always delivered alongside the restoration, so nothing is ever lost to the correction.
- Colour fade handled per channel, not as one wash
- Restored page read back and checked
- Untouched original delivered with every job
Built to be trusted at the edges
Faded Document Recovery is one capability inside a pipeline built on a single idea: a restoration you cannot trust at the edges is a picture of one.
Everything is read back
Every restored page is read as text and compared against what was legible before, so nothing appears out of nowhere without being flagged.
The original is never lost
The untouched capture is always delivered beside the restoration - the recovery is a new version, never an overwrite.
Refusals are the product
What cannot be recovered is marked, not guessed. The guarantee is built into how the pipeline runs, not asked of a model.
It reads back as data
Fields come out checked against the document's own arithmetic, with withheld values kept in their own column - never mixed with blanks.
One sheet or a whole shelf
Per-page isolation means a single difficult document never stops the run - each page keeps its own progress, result and failure.

Free to start, no watermark, and if a document is not recoverable we would rather tell you than sell you a plan.
Where a general-purpose tool goes wrong
The same document, two philosophies. One optimises for a convincing picture; the other for a correct one - and says so when those two part ways.
What most tools do
- One brightness curve for the entire page
- Pale corner stays blank or dark side goes black
- Whitens the paper whether you want it or not
- Colour casts left drifting toward magenta
What Docovly does
- A fade map sampled across the whole sheet
- Per-region inversion - each area lifted to fit
- Paper tone chosen separately from recovery
- Colour fade corrected channel by channel
What it will not do
Enforced by how the pipeline is built rather than by instructions given to a model - which is the only kind of guarantee worth writing down.
- 1Intact regions are not over-corrected to match damaged ones
- 2Paper tone is a separate control from text recovery
- 3The untouched original is always delivered alongside

What people ask before sending us a document with this kind of damage.
Have a document you are not sure about?
Send us a photograph of it. We will tell you honestly whether it is recoverable before you spend anything.
Ask usFaded text repair works on the ink; this works on the sheet. A document with an uneven fade usually needs both, and they run together - the page is levelled first so that stroke recovery has a consistent surface to work against.
