Restoration is the easy half. The record of it is the product
Any model can produce a clean, confident version of a damaged page. What makes it usable in an archive, a registry or a court is being able to say precisely what was changed, what was verified, and what could not be resolved at all.
The one-line version
Repair the paper, hold what authenticates it, read the page back, check it against its own arithmetic, and report whatever is left over.
Four stages, start to finish
Survey the damage, take the pages in, restore them one at a time, then read the result back and check it. About a minute a page.

Standard
Six ways a document can prove its own restoration
Which checks are available depends on the document. Where one exists in the paper itself, it is used - and where none does, a second independent reader takes its place.
Check digits
MRZ lines, reference numbers and many official identifiers carry a check digit. Recovered values are recomputed against it - a value that satisfies its own checksum is verified arithmetically, which beats any second opinion.
Identity, travel and government documents
Column arithmetic
Captured ledger lines are totalled against their own columns. A mismatch almost always means an ambiguous digit, so the offending rows are flagged rather than quietly accepted.
Financial and employment documents
Two independent readers
Where a document carries no arithmetic of its own, every value is read by two independent passes. Agreement is accepted; disagreement is surfaced with both readings shown.
Education records and certificates
Geometric closure
Bearings and distances read from a survey plan are walked around the parcel. If the traverse does not close within tolerance, the plan is flagged before a conveyancer sees it.
Property and real estate
Medication safety
Drug names are checked against known look-alike and sound-alike pairs, and doses against plausible ranges for the drug and route. Anything that trips a check is withheld for a clinician.
Medical and health records
Sequence integrity
Clause and page numbering is read back across a restored document and checked for gaps and duplicates, so a dropped page is reported rather than discovered later.
Legal and corporate documents
The interesting part is
what it refuses to do
Any model asked to restore a damaged page will produce something confident and complete. On a will, a prescription or a deed, that confidence is the failure mode - not the feature.
These four rules are enforced by how the pipeline is built rather than by instructions given to a model, which is the only kind of guarantee worth putting in writing.
How verification worksMissing text is never invented
Paper, rules, borders and security patterns are rebuilt from the surviving sheet, because their structure is fully determined. Text that existed only on a missing piece is marked as a loss - the way an archivist would mark it.
Seals and signatures are composited, not generated
Held regions never pass through a restoration engine at all. They are excluded, then copied back from the original with a feathered edge - so an institution can state that the marks on a delivered sheet are the originals.
Uncertain values are withheld and marked
Every captured field carries its confidence and its source crop. Anything that fails its check digit, its column total or its second reader is withheld into its own export column, so a blank never passes as a clean read.
The original is never overwritten
Every treatment lands as its own revertible version. The untouched capture stays in the job for as long as the job exists, which is what makes a provenance record possible at all.
What actually arrives at the end
A restored image on its own is not a deliverable. The job carries everything needed to defend it later.
- 1The restored file, at the resolution the job produced
- 2The untouched original capture, always
- 3Every intermediate version, each revertible
- 4Captured fields as CSV, with withheld values in their own column
- 5A record of which treatments ran, in order
- 6Reconstruction regions, renderable as an overlay

Have a document you are not sure about?
Send us a photograph of it. We will tell you honestly whether it is recoverable before you spend anything.
Ask usThe principle that a restoration is only as trustworthy as the record of what was done to it. In practice: the original is never overwritten, every treatment is a revertible version, held regions never pass through an engine, and reconstructed areas are recorded so they can be shown separately.
Put your worst document in first
Not the easy one. The faded, torn, water-marked one you assumed was gone. Free to start, no card, and the original is never overwritten.
