Restore a water-damaged certificate

Tide lines, foxing and a cockled sheet - how to capture it, survey it, and keep the seal intact through the whole job.

Water is the most common serious damage to a stored certificate, and the most destructive to clean badly. The stain sits on top of the lettering, so anything that bleaches the stain out takes the calligraphy with it. This is the order of operations that avoids that.

1. Capture before you do anything else

  1. 1Do not attempt to flatten a cockled sheet. Capture it as it lies - curvature is corrected computationally, and forcing damp-damaged paper flat can crack it.
  2. 2Use indirect daylight, flash off. A tide line under flash reads as a hard edge rather than a gradient.
  3. 3Include the full border. Registrar stamps and reference numbers usually sit close to the edge.
  4. 4If the certificate is framed, take it out if you safely can. If not, capture twice from different angles so reflections can be separated.

2. Survey the condition honestly

Record what you can actually see rather than what you hope is wrong. Water damage usually arrives with company: tide lines, foxing where the damp encouraged it, and often mould bloom at the wettest point. Tick all of them - the treatment is derived from the survey, so an incomplete survey produces an incomplete restoration.

Paper tone is a separate choice from the cleaning. Decide it deliberately: keep the aged character, return to natural cream, or take it to archival white.

3. Hold the seal before you treat anything

Draw a box around the embossed seal, any wax, and the registrar's signature. Held regions are excluded from every treatment and composited back from the original afterwards, which is what lets you say the marks on the finished sheet are the originals. Do this before the first treatment, not after - the hold applies for the life of the job.

4. Treat, then look at the join

  1. 1Run stain removal first. It separates the discolouration layer from the ink and lifts it.
  2. 2Then print clarity, to bring the lettering the stain crossed back to the density of the rest of the sheet.
  3. 3Check the seal boundary at full zoom. The composite is feathered, so the join should be invisible.
  4. 4If a tear or lost corner remains, mark it and run targeted repair - only the marked region is rebuilt.

5. Verify before you file it

Run data capture. The award details, certificate number and dates are read back and checked. Anything the pipeline could not resolve appears as withheld rather than as a value, which is the point at which you find out whether the restoration actually recovered the number or merely made the page look better.
